The blogger, detained since January 2017, was prosecuted for spying for the benefit of “foreign agents with the aim of undermining Algeria’s diplomatic position”, “incitement to take up arms” and “incitement to gather”, and this, following the publication of two videos, one on Youtube and the other on Facebook, which according to the authorities have encouraged “civil unrest”, reports Amnesty International.

The appeal hearing of Merzouk Touati is taking place today, March 4, 2019, at 9 am, at the Criminal Court of Skikda.

According to Mr. Athmane Bessalem, one of the defense lawyers, all the conditions of a fair trial are not met. Despite the judge’s order, the police prevented the public from entering at the beginning of the trial.
