The United States reacted on Tuesday to the decision of the Bouteflika clan to postpone the presidential election and not run for a fifth term.
Washington has expressed support for a political process in Algeria “that respects the will of the Algerians“, insisting on the necessity for “free and fair elections” according to the AFP.
US foreign policy spokesman Robert Palladino did not directly comment on Bouteflika’s decisions to postpone the elections: “We are keeping a close eye on the news of a postponement of the elections” he stated.
“We support the efforts in Algeria to set up a new process on the basis of a dialogue that respects the will of all Algerians and their aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous future“. He also reaffirmed the support of the United States for “the right of Algerians to demonstrate and express their views peacefully“.
