Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel and his US counterpart Michael Pompeo, met at the 4th session of the Algerian-American strategic dialogue, Tuesday in Washington, and discussed the close and productive partnership of future cooperation between the two countries.

Mike Pompeo who has financial interests in the oil industry is one of the most notorious conservatives in the U.S due to his controversial positions on a variety of issues, such as his opposition to abortion and his pro-guns stance.

Most notably, Mike Pompeo denies the existence of Co2 and global warming, in a statement made in 2013, the neoconservative stated “There are scientists who think lots of different things about climate change. There’s some who think we’re warming, there’s some who think we’re cooling, there’s some who think that the last 16 years have shown a pretty stable climate environment”.

In another controversy, Mike Pompeo, a lifetime member of the powerful lobby the National Rifle Association, was the man who once advocated for massive surveillance programs through the NSA, a U.S surveillance organ previously caught intercepting Algeria’s communications.

For many analysts we interviewed the trip made by Abdelkader Messahel, has only one objective, to garner support for a fifth term of the current authoritarian president in exchange of juicy oil and gas contracts.

Other analysts have also expressed concerns about the Sergey Lavrov visit a few days ago, and have interpreted the visit as Russia checking that they do not lose out, through a democratic process, on what they consider their traditional backyard.
