Royal approval / King Felipe of Spain: We have confidence in the Algerian authorities

King Felipe VI

The Algeria Press Service (APS) – a government agency largely considered to be a mouthpiece of the authorities – quoted today King Felipe VI as saying and reaffirming “his confidence in the Algerian authorities and the political class to pass this stage” in reference to the latest military-led power grab in the country.

The conversation is alleged to have occurred on the sidelines of the state burial of late Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi.

It is unclear whether the King of Spain really made such a statement, especially when taking into account the fact that dozens of demonstrators and opposition figures have been arbitrarily jailed by the authorities, many remain in custody while others have been mistreated in custody.

Over the past months, a number of fake news have been also been relayed by media outlets close to the authorities which could very well be the case here. The Algiers Herald was unable to independently verify the information advanced by the APS.

The legal term of the country’s interim president ended on the 9th of July.
