1 min read

Compiled by the prestigious American think tank The Heritage Foundation, the world ranking of economic freedom 2019 now ranks Algeria 171st out of the total of 180 countries evaluated, putting Algeria in the ‘repressed’ category and amongst the 10 worst countries in the world in terms of economic Freedom. In contrast, our direct neighbour Morocco ranked 75th with an impressive jump of 9 spots.

The countries are evaluated on the following criteria:

  1. Rule of Law (property rights, government integrity, judicial effectiveness)
  2. Government Size (government spending, tax burden, fiscal health)
  3. Regulatory Efficiency (business freedom, labor freedom, monetary freedom)
  4. Open Markets (trade freedom, investment freedom, financial freedom)

This ranking further demonstrates the failure of the current regime to diversify the Algerian economy and liberalise investment whilst leaving the country in the same group as North Korea, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.
