Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel gave a lecture at the International Center for Strategic and Security Studies (CSIS) in Washington on the Algerian experience in the fight against terrorism, national reconciliation and stabilisation of the region.
The Minister also highlighted “the efforts of the Algerian government to preserve the country’s stability in a difficult regional context“.
In this context he did not miss the opportunity to prop up the current president of Algeria, and referred to the policies of civil concord and national reconciliation by the President of the Republic, which according to him have given back to Algerian society “its cohesion and unity“.
“All these reforms have greatly contributed to the preservation of the stability of our country and the socio-economic development that it has known during the last years” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Messahel is in Washington as part of the 4th session of the Algerian-American strategic dialogue, which he will co-chair on Tuesday with his counterpart Micheal Pompeo.
Abdelkader Messahel participated in the African Union Peace and Security Council Summit on South Sudan, held in New York, on the sidelines of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly.
He recalled Algeria’s position in favor of a political solution to the crisis in South Sudan, based on the dyptic dialogue and national reconciliation.
The Foreign Minister also expressed Algeria’s commitment to support any convergence towards the definitive settlement of this crisis.
Meeting with the Algerian community
Mr. Messahel took the opportunity of his stay in the US capital to meet representatives of the national community established in the United States.
This meeting, which is part of regular contacts with the national community abroad, was an opportunity for the Minister of Foreign Affairs to listen to the expectations and concerns of the Algerian community in the United States of America.
Whilst underlining “the important role that the Algerian government grants to the national community abroad under the leadership and instructions of the President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika“, Mr. Messahel referred to “the measures taken in this framework, for the improvement of the consular service, in particular the modernisation and digitisation of the administration“.
He also recalled the decisions of the President of the Republic in favor of the national community abroad in terms of access to housing in Algeria and the support of investors and youth from this community.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs also emphasised “the comprehensive reforms implemented in Algeria for the diversification of the national economy, an area to which the national community can contribute through investment“.
He also referred to “all the reforms that followed for the reappropriation of national identity, including the Amazigh dimension with the Amazigh language as a national and official language and the proclamation of the Yennayer holiday as a national holiday“.
